importance of group discussion, group discussion, why group discussion, role of group discussion, why is group discussion important

The discourse of ideas and opinions is a healthy habit without which communication among human beings is tough to establish. Words coming out from someone’s mouth are processed in someone’s consciousness and then verbally pronounced. It is tough to thrive in a world where there is no valid communication, in fact, there is no world like that. Communication creates wonders, forms bonds, ends a relationship, innovates, and even destroys. Discussion is a part of communication that involves the mention of the pros and cons of a relationship that can create new avenues, opportunities, establish new relations, and can even clear doubts.

If a group discussion navigates in the right direction, it would not be tough to derive valuable information from it. Often, group discussions end up in debating due to a clash of opinions. There is a thin line of difference between discussions and debates. Discussions are the communication in which you hold a common ground to discuss or talk about, even though this event can lead to taking sides but keeping in mind the nature of the talk, differences are acknowledged and accepted. On the other hand, the very idea of debates is to argue and have points and statements that differ from others. It is very tough to maintain the decorum of a discussion as it might culminate into a debate in no time.

Group discussion, be it formal or informal, for a job, university entrance exams, or even for a simple healthy exchange of ideas in a class setting, among friends, or even in an office setting, has always been proved to be fruitful and insightful. Never has it ever gone in vain. Group Discussions or GD as we can refer to it in short, have always proved to be beneficial for any matter or decision stuck for some time.
GDs are a significant and sensible way of conveying or portraying your emotions and thoughts and even provokes the person who is not much into public speaking, such can be the power and ambiance of a group discussion. The best part about GDs is that they bring out the best in everyone and establishes the importance of Group Discussion.

Here are certain points that throw some light on the importance of group discussion:

  • Strengthens Communication Skills:

In a GD, you learn the ways to address and convey your ideology to a group of people who are from different backgrounds and from different fields of occupation. Each of them has different personality traits and characteristics and this makes you conscious and careful enough to not hurt anyone’s feelings but still express your feelings.

  • Builds Patience:

GDs can be long and energetic for which you need to retain some amount of patience within you to listen as well as to even answer. You cannot become aggressive as this is against the normal code-of-conduct.

  • Enhances Knowledge:

This function either way; you are running research on that particular topic and the other person putting forth his/her knowledge on it. So, you get to learn a lot of new and relatable stuff.

  • Improves Public Speaking:

Even though you were well versed in the techniques of public speaking, there is nothing wrong with learning more and Group Discussions are the best way to learn this skill. Those who were afraid, conscious, or nervous about speaking among so many bright minds, will get a handful of experience from these sessions. Group Discussions or discussions of any kind with a known or unknown person can tap the undiscovered parts of you, something even you were not aware of.

  • Learn Social Etiquette:

It is not a skill but a necessity. Social etiquette simply means you give deserving respect to others with whom you come across- they can be anyone. Group discussions will have people from different walks of life, from different age groups and yet you are supposed to treat them equally and listen to their statements with utmost respect and acceptance.

  • Correct Body Language:

You will notice and maybe realize later that your body language has changed when you are in a GD. You have become erect and alert so that you can contribute generously to the discussion that is going on. You would have become cordial and respectful. You will also become aware of how to excuse yourself when you perform something that disrupts the flow of the ambiance like sneezing, coughing, or even visiting restrooms.

Group Discussions are made up of a lot of information and patience without which it is impossible to hold a discussion. Personality development classes work a great deal on emphasizing these points and help the students or candidates become GD-ready. GD will not only be beneficial for your professional life but can affect your personal life as well, and that too in a positive way.
